Interested in what it takes to run for Los Alamitos City Council? Here’s what I had to submit to the City Clerk to run for Los Alamitos City Council. Completing this process is called “pulling papers.”
Required
- FPPC Form 501 (prior to solicitation or receipt of any funds)
- Nomination Papers (30 signatures of neighbors that live in Los Alamitos District 5)
- California Secretary of State Ballot Designation Worksheet
- FPPC Form 700
- $25 filing fee
Completing these forms, getting these signatures, and paying this fee met the minimum requirement to get my name on the November 8, 2022 ballot for Los Alamitos City Council, District 5. There are, however, some additional options.
But before I list those additional options, I want to take a minute to say THANK YOU to all of my neighbors on Paseo Bonita and Pine who signed my Nomination Papers.
Because of your support, and signatures, my name will be on the ballot. I think it’s great that the City of Los Alamitos requires candidates for City Council to collect signatures from their neighbors. For me, it gave me another reason to visit neighbors, share a drink, have a chat on the porch, hang out on the front lawn, and sit at the kitchen table for hours catching up.
Optional
- Candidate’s Statement (200 word maximum submitted via e-mail in Microsoft Word format)
- $500 check for Candidate’s Statement
- Candidate Statement Agreement
- Code of Fair Campaign Practices
- Resume
I opted for the Candidate Statement because, in my calculation, it’s the most effective way to reach every registered voter in Los Alamitos’ District 5. Here’s the breakdown.
The Candidate Statement costs $500. District 5 has about 1,200 registered voters. Every voter will receive a Sample Ballot from the Orange County Registrar of Voters a month or so before the November 8 election. Those 1,200 voters will then read my 200-word Candidate Statement (hopefully).
So, for about 42 cents per voter, the OC Registrar of voters will print, translate, and mail my Candidate Statement to every voter in my district.
Thank you OC Registrar of Voters!
This Friday, August 12, 2022, is the deadline to pull papers, so I should know a bit more about next steps by next week. I hope you’ve found this interesting and informative. I’ll be posting updates as they happen.
